Georgette Mitchell graduated from Fordham University with a B.A. in French and Francophone literature. She then earned teaching certification from the University of Pennsylvania's Graduate School of Education while working as a Philadelphia Teaching Fellow and an AmeriCorps grant recipient. In 2011 she received an M.A. in French and Romance Philology from Columbia University. She spent the following years working as a bilingual teacher for the New York City Department of Education. She is currently a doctoral fellow in French at Rutgers University.

Her research areas include French colonialism, postcolonial theory and Francophone literature, particularly that of Louisiana, Haiti and the French Antilles. She is also interested in French cinema under the German occupation and gender studies in "Tradition of Quality" films.
