In 2011, a series of unexpected events rocked several Arab countries. These events have received many names: Arab Spring, Revolutions, Upheavals. They took different forms, and more importantly, led to very different outcomes over the following decade. To be able to understand this wave, it is important to not only observe the deep currents and strong subterranean forces, but also the ephemeral foam : the presence and voice of hundreds of thousands of ordinary revolutionaries who disappeared quickly from the public spaces. What did these events mean for those participants ? And what remains today from that emancipatory momentum?

Youssef El Chazli is an Associate Professor (MCF) of Sociology at the University of Paris 8 Vincennes Saint Denis. He holds a PhD in Political Science from the universities of Paris 1 Panthéon Sorbonne and Lausanne. His work looks at ordinary forms of revolutionary action and participation in the Arab world. He was a visiting scholar at Columbia University and a postdoctoral scholar at the CNRS (Paris and Berlin) and at Brandeis University (Waltham, MA).
