Prerequisite: At least one 300-level course or equivalent.
Drawing from the Moroccan sociologist Fatima Mernissi, the course will shed light on the ability of Arab women and the LGBTQ+ community to negotiate their place within society. Students are invited to experience Francophone literature and art works from the 20th and 21st centuries. They will develop active reading comprehension, improve critical thinking and writing skills. The goal is to have a better understanding of the emergence of feminism as well as gender and sexuality discussions in a certain number of Francophone Arab-Muslim countries which bases its advocacy on rights, equality and the refusal of the patriarchy.
We will analyze different kinds of work: short fiction, essays, newspaper articles, music, novels, graphic novels to understand how literature, art, media and new technology highlight the evolution of ideas and their expression.Course taught in English. Open to advanced undergraduate students and students in the MAT program.
